20071230.59267:Dream

I had a great dream last night. I was at work and My wife, sister in law and her boyfriend all decided to go get tattoos. My mother for some reason picked me up and we stopped at Moe's for lunch. After lunch she dropped me off at the tattoo shop. At some point someone offered to buy is more Moe's, but having just eaten it, they got us ice cream. When it was my turn to get a tattoo, I decided to get a ying yang themed tattoo. Anthony Bourdain was my tattoo artist and he proceeded to go to work. However, instead of doing the tattoo I had requested he put a "Class of 1990" on me with a bunch of year book signatures. Then there was a "Eat at Joe's" bit with a part that looked like an old stamp that said "Hamburgers made fresh daily".

At first I was livid. I didn't even graduate in 1990! The manager came in and assured me I'd be taken care of, but at some point, I realized that it was incredibly funny. So I decided to keep it as is. I showed it to Chava who had about the same thoughts...

Just craziness.

20071214.87055:Atheist Christmas

As an atheist, I suppose I am supposed to dislike christmas, but I still love it. I don't believe in God or Jesus (at least not as he's described in the bible), so I'm not celebrating his birth, of course. However, even when I was a christian I knew that the day of his birth was probably wrong. I just celebrate the feeling of christmas, the giving of gifts, the look of joy in my childrens eyes. To qoute Stevie Wonder, That's what Christmas means to me.

Personally, I just don't like the idea that everything comes from parents. I find the idea of external delivery to be comforting.

Besides parentism is just a theory right?

When selecting your next translation there is another contender on the block. Should it be teh holiez bibul or The brick testament.

Hmmm. Why do we have to have so many valid options?

So I've seen this commercial a few times. I just can't help but think it's so sad.

First. If anyone sees the comments, you should know that I think Beyonce is incredibly good looking. I have nothing but respect for her.

It's just that the commercial makes her life look like a version of hell.

If anyone should have a happy life it's Beyonce. She should be on the beach everyday drinking Pina Coladas. Not completely miserable.

20070925.30681:hypothesis, theories and facts

I wish we these words would be clearly defined. I was watching weeds last night and the same tired discussion of the "Theory of evolution" not the "Fact of evolution" came up. While this poor dead horse lies there, let me state clearly, that nothing will ever make evolution a "fact", but nothing more is needed to make evolution true.

Facts are simple things. They are pieces of data. It is a fact that you share 95-99.4% of your DNA with a chimpanzee. It is a fact that there are many many transitional fossils. It is a fact that the earth is 4 billion years old (or at least some of the rocks on it). Evolution is bigger than these facts. It's not like we can look some place and find evolution. We can see individuals evolve sure, but theories are wide ideas that facts fit into. They, of course, predict future facts, and if future facts fit into the theory, the theory strengthens. Evolution, by the way, is one of the strongest theories out there.

That isn't to say that every theory out there is true. To compare, allow me to introduce string theory. This theory has very little real world data backing it up (A ton of math though). As a result, many scientists are skeptical. Personally, I'm open minded on the subject. There has been a lot of work on it, and I'd like to see it succeed, but until we start seeing the real world fit into it, then I'll have to wait.

Now we turn to germ theory. You may have heard of this. The gist is that many of the things that make us sick are caused by micro-organisms. You probably not only know this theory, but believe it whole heartedly. Does the real world back it up? Of course! We've seen bacteria and viruses. We've fought them and seen people get better. Ever western hospital believes in this idea and there belief in it is how they cure patients. It's still a theory though. It will never be a "fact". It's a fact that there are bacteria. That fact supports germ theory. However, you can't just look somewhere and see germ theory.

Remember, germ theory the next time someone says that evolution is just a theory.

I woke up and read it on /.

The weirdest part was trying to explain to my sleeping wife what was going on.

So far this morning, I've read a few posts expressing a desire to think of the people and move on...I don't think that's something you can just tell people to do...fortunately though, we seem to be doing just that.

I share the sorrow of the victims of the fallen families, though I could never share their depth of sorrow. I share the respect of most Americans for the heros who died that day and saved more lives than we'll ever know. Lastly, I share the hope that justice will be done and that this country will return to the beacon of freedom and liberty that it was founded to be.

20070904.71892:MLK (as I've never seen him before)

Now, I should start by saying that this isn't the first negative thing I've ever heard about the man.

This all started because I am reading "God is Not Great" by Christopher Hitchens and he started talking about MLK jr. Now, he was saying generally positive things, but he did mention some faults to prove his point. I started looking up some of the things he said and came across this

I agree with Hitchens that none of this should detract from who he is, but it's really an odd thing to read.

20070902.51704:Mice are away

Yes, I know I got it backwards...but sometimes when the mice are away, the cat can just sit back and not worry about catching them.

My girls have been gone all weekend. I miss them, but they should be back this evening.

Chava, Jack and I went to the Falcons game on Friday which was fun. Yesterday we saw Stardust which was good. I expected more, but that's usually the case when I've read the book before the movie. Today we're just relaxing and watching TV (CSI as that's Chava's addiction of late).

Other than that, I'm just enjoying time away from work when I can get it.
